While I agree with your sentiment that "god particle" is over-hyping the Higgs, there is one point I wish to contest. You seem to belittle the Higgs mechanism a bit too much when arguing your point. While, yes, most of the "mass" we observe is due to gluons or "interaction energy", it is a purely relativistic effect.

I'm going to regret making this comment, especially since I can't delete it. But a friend told me that if you spread your cheeks with your hands before you fart, it comes out silent. And when it's silent, it smells less. Placebo/psychological effect or something? I don't know...

Are you talking about Europe or the US? More so for the former, but the cost of energy is undervalued as it doesn't take into account the true environment costs and military cost of ensuring a stable supply. Second, salaries is a major cost. I mean, saving $1.25million a year is only 10 or so staff (the cost of a

And by that he/you mean ecstasy, right?

Brother from another mother? :-)

Yea, Winamp 3 sucked big time. It became bloated. All the skins and plug-ins for Winamp, and the fact that you can rearrange the main winamp player, playlist window and equalizer made for thousands of combinations. Every true nerd though they had the ideal setting.

A few things compounded to make me switch to iTunes. Winamp 3 was so horrible I had to switch back to 2; and when 5 came out, it had lost a lot of momentum for me. I, like everyone else, got an iPod (my first was in 2005). I tried to resist Apple at the time by managing it in disk mode. (There was no support for iPods

This is precisely correct. It's not a multiverse nor a parallel universe. If the theory is correct, then it is only a mirror (or parity) reversed universe.

What a surprise to see this article from my field of research (final year PhD) posted on io9. The general opinion of our field is that, while the idea for the experiment is nice (and the implications rather amusing), the precision of the technique is not good enough for a stringent search for neutron->mirror neutron

There must be an plateau in the earnings when your team gets too large. I have a feeling when your group, which you shall call "Ocean's", gets to 13, your whole francise will flop. Should have stopped at 12.

Apparently they are called "bolo shells" which work for shot guns. Chain shots are more for cannons, aren't they? "In modern times, the effect is replicated in shotguns with the use of Bolo shells — a pair of slugs connected by a strong wire.[4] They are banned in several jurisdictions, including Florida[5] and

Spectacle looks great but I hate the App Store. Any way of getting it without it? I'm on their "github" page but am utterly confused. [github.com]

Huh? Watching the cockroach fail and land hard on it's "back" was highly rewarding and made my day. The gecko was damn cute as well. :D

:D

5, 8, 7, 9.5 for me. Different strokes for different folks. But yea, the one on the right does something for me I can't explain. Well... i could, but i might be banned. :-)

Agreed. Working as a programmer/engineer/"insert any geeky professions here" is also sexist and exploits men. We are just used for our huge... brains.

haha. i thought the same! If such a device were to be available at a college dorm, topless chicks would be alllll over it!

I am very average looking, so I have had to adapt and make a living with my brain, which happens to function ok. I sometimes feel sorry for girls (and also guys) that were too pretty when they were younger at school so that teachers, other pupils, all treated them differently. Things were handed to them on a silver

As redesigned points out, this is merely a compensation for people who lost due technical faults in the NASDAQ system. $100 million mistake for an IPO valued at $50-100 billion is barely a dent. Plus it is paid out by a private company, and not the public funds like a bail out, so no moral hazard is created.
