The municipal shelter system in NYC has a horrific reputation. There's nothing bad enough that can happen to this woman, I think. People think nothing of abandoning animals and the shelter system disposes of them in cruel and painful ways.

Does a vegan only agricultural system mean the non-existence of ruminants or the unavailability of fish, blood or bonemeal fertilizer? Presumably things would still be dying. I don't really know the rules of a hypothetical vegan only agricultural system, it seems pretty far fetched.

Agreed...no one tells kids, drink your milk — lots of baby cows were ripped away from their mommas and killed horribly so don't waste it. Kids...everyone is insulated from food. If you're going to eat meat you should accept that it involves suffering.
