Agree strongly with your points and recs of Lackey and Elliot. The former writes such detailed and diverse characters, and the latter such a believable world, and great character development and plot progression, at least in terms of the individuals. 

Based on that bit about deconstructing fantasy through sci-fi, have you read the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey? If not, it might be right up your alley, if you have the patience to stick with it.
