Just use your heavy melee on the boss: Edelgard, Dimitri, Byleth, Balthus. The four of them together, plus one person to do a gambit, should be able to take an entire health bar out in a single turn on normal mode. Even in the stages where you have back-to-back fights you can still repair. You can repair from the pre-combat menu, not just going to Abyss.

I stand up when the plane lands because I have a busted knee from getting hit by a car when I was younger and sitting down for long periods of time is agony. By the end of the flight my legs are screaming at me to get off the plane and stretch out a bit.

Are the Heavensward classes still gated by completing all of the base storyline? Are the new classes gated to completing all of the previous content?

You still need the Corium, but you can also get it from Escari, and there are a bunch of them in quests.
