The default"remote" is the xbox one controller... Has the same and more capabilities of the new remote(except volume). On top of that, kinect. The new remote is awfully redundant. It is just a fancy accessory that happens to control most tv volumes.

No I think its a sign of offering a way to control the xbox with a remote instead of smartglass or a controller, for those who don't have/know of smartglass, and who don't like/understand controllers. So a small subset of their users (mostly entertainment-only or heavy users)

You don't have to buy it. You don't need it. You can navigate the TV controls with either the game controller, Kinect, SmartGlass, or you can still use the remote that comes with your cable provider. This is just another option. I think you're trying too hard to be outraged by this.

Oh come off your high horse. Are you upset they don't come with an extra controller as well? Or the fact that now that it has USB keyboard support that it didn't come with a keyboard. Accessories are just that accessories. Everything you do with this remote you can do with the controller or kinect.
