They already did update assault. It is still a little bit T sided, but the update made it a bit more balanced. There are windows on the ceiling of the warehouse that you can shoot through so the T's can't just hide and wait.

Not a single one of the purchases in game are required to play or give any sort of actual gameplay advantage. They're all purely cosmetic and you even get a couple free (though typically crappy) skins a week.
