It's just for LOD, and it hardly takes much work: just get the old landmass data from MW and OB, run it through a utility to generate LOD, and boom, it's in game.

You realise Battlefield goes back further than Battlefield 2 right? They had PC Gaming's respect since Battlefield 1942, kind of lost it a bit with Battlefield 2 having never included MO'FUCKING DRIVABLE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS
