So from what I am finding some older phones saved the SMS on the sim. If it’s on a GSM carrier like ATT or T-Mobile and required a SIM, it’s possible the SMS are saved there. I would imagine the SIM is in as bad a shape as the phone but it might be salvagable. I would love to see a follow up on this to know if…
