But Orlove is basing the article on US law, where you are being taxed on the full sales price of the car which is not the case in Europe (on used cars). That was what I was pointing out, not taxes on profit!

Not true! Let me give you an real world example. I had a dealer sell a car for me once. His commission was 10%. VAT in that particular EU country was and still is 25%.
If he had to pay VAT on the sales, the dealer would have lost 15% on the deal.

I can guarantee you that a car dealer in Germany does not pay MWST to the government on a used car they sell and that goes for every EU country. This is coming from someone that works in commercial trade and have lived (and have bought and sold new and used cars) in 5 European countries (including Germany).

All prices in Europe has to include taxes in advertised sales price when sold as new, but since this item is used, tax (in this case MWST) has already been paid when the car was new and can not be applied twice. So Tax on the car is exactly $0 / €0!
