If you look closely you'll see a small twin turbo prop fly overhead before the tanker. That's a spotter plane who instructs the tanker on where to drop their load.

First airline job too... Started flying at age 16. 1,700 hours as FAA and JAA CFI/CFII instructor in the US and then got a 737-800 right seat in Europe. And he was barely 24 when he got that job... One of the most responsible kids I have ever known though (except when it comes to knocking up flight attendants)!!!!

I live in San Diego and have taken the trip down to Tijuana many times. Technically it is possible to miss the last exit but you are warned several times that there are no more exits.
