that's what the google+ phone app is for. I'm not sure on the iphone side, but on the android side, you can make a stream on your phone exclusive to whatever circle you created.
that's what public posts are for, and following your favourite bands, event planners, etc.. If you have a google+ account, and a smart phone with the google+ app, you can look at the nearby thread, and it will track your GPS location, and tell you what is going on around you, via public posts.
I welcome it too, and also agree it's hard to get people to move there. I think it's much better than facebook, and is even a more fun experience on the mobile app. My girl friends don't want to switch over yet, but all of their gripes on facebook is easily solved on G+. So I have 5 friends on there and over 100…

I saw the trucks/trailers parked just in front of my condo, when they shot that scene. Every few weeks they have trucks parked there for something (concerts at Much Music, movies, etc. etc.) I didn't know what they were there for, until I saw the photos in the newspaper.
