There's nothing magical about automatic transmission fluid. It's simply a thin oil with a high detergent content due to the additives used.

It's not that bad. Usually when it's sloppy, the non-serviceable bushings in the little shifter U-joint are shot, meaning you have the replace the whole joint, Subaru PN 35047AC030 . I replaced mine about 2 weeks ago, and while it's no Miata shifter, it's a lot better than some of the American cars I've driven.
