There is a good reason for the install in this game, and that is providing a better experience. They aren't asking you to install 8GB of data just because they want to, it's because not doing so would have meant sacrificing a lot of things in the game that would have greatly reduced its quality.

There's literally over a hundred games out there that let you play directly from the disc. There's no reason to be so anal just because one game every now and then needs you to install, specially when it's doing it to provide you with a better experience.

Just leave it installing beforehand when you don't yet have free time to actually play the game.

I played through HL2 without using the buggy. Biggest struggle was a part where you have to jump over a broken section of a road. Had to stack a shitload of boxes and then jump while propelling myself with a rocket launcher explosion. After several dozen tries I finally made it, it was so satisfying. :p
