I don’t think Ferris is supposed to represent a real person that we should empathize with, he’s supposed to represent the trickster god that we all need to go along with every once in a while to remind ourselves that life isn’t super serious and we should have a good time sometimes.

Uptight squares hate Ferris Bueller for the same reason Jeannie does in the beginning of the movie: because he gets away with flouting rules the rest of us feel compelled to follow.
The entire point of the movie is that Steve Martin is put in a serious of ludicrous, frequently dangerous situations because of John Candy. It’s definitely not fair to label him the asshole because he gets mad at being driven the wrong way on the interstate or having their rental car completely torched.
