But they sold the seats. This is just greed.

If you don’t show up you are still charged for the ticket, though (at least, that’s what happened to me when I missed a flight). So airlines just want to make twice the money of one seat, and I can’t summon up a whole lot of sympathy for that.

It’s not that they were really overbooked as per say overbooked, they need to relocate their crew to Louisville and it was sold out flight. They do it all the time. Also it’s E170, which doesn’t give extra room to add extra passengers.

United’s response to this has just been awful. Amazing that they’re still just sending the “please contact law enforcement” bullshit deflection response to requests for comment. I look forward to all the commenters who will show up and say this is standard practice and that if the man didn’t want to be beaten and forcibly removed from the plane, he shouldn’t have boarded it.

If only there were some way to keep airlines from selling more seats than are physically available in a plane.

In what universe is this not just a done-deal massive cash settlement for the poor sap they just dragged off the flight? Even if united had contractual authority to remove passengers for this reason, doing so BY FORCE seems like it’s just making someone a millionaire overnight...
