There was a plot on airliners.net showing a cyclical loss of altitude with what could be MCAS activation every ten seconds. Pitch the aircraft down enough, and it won’t gain altitude, even with flaps.

Note the airspeed from Flight Aware. There is no way flaps were still down by that point.

I predict the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) played a role, combined with Pilot’s relative inexperience with MCAS.
