In some ways, I prefer ZAZ’s “A Fistful of Yen” to the movie it’s taking off on, Enter the Dragon. While Evan Kim’s no Bruce Lee, he’s not bad as a humorous martial arts hero, and Bong Soo Han is a far better villain than Shih Kien ever was.

I came here to call out the lack of Hot shots mentions and I am glad to see others carrying the torch.
I completely disagree. Sorry. They hold up just fine, yeah, even with The Juice.
I forgot about Johnny Dangerously once.
I’m glad someone mentioned Hot Shots. It still holds a place in my heart, even if my taste in comedy has moved on. I really love the scene where the demolitions guy is talking about settling down, getting married, buying a place with a white picket fence, and then blowing the shit out of it.
The spoof genre may have tumbled, but it’s tumbled down to where everyone expects it to be.
I love Hot Shots. Lloyd Bridges as Admiral Benson stole the show.
Undercover Brother is amazing and woefully underrated.
I remember loving that movie, was that the one where the protagonist is guiding POW’s through the jungle and they cross over through a suburban back yard where a family is having a BBQ?
I’m no apologist for these guys but HOOWWWW the FUCCK is Scary Movie 3, the funniest of the series, at the bottom here. “The dogs are acting funny,” the hot dog taco scene, the “AND TWINNNS!” reference....fuck this, that movie is an imperfect classic.
ZAZ’s Kentucky Fried Movie remains the perfect distillation of that kind of filmmaking. Forget plot, character development, and all that crap. Catholic High School Girls in Trouble needs the full-length treatment.
Spaceballs works primarily because of Moranis and Candy.
Yep, that movie is fantastic.
I loved it in 5th grade, but when I rewatched it for my Primer on Mel Brooks (https://tv.avclub.com/where-to-start-with-mel-brooks-high-quality-low-comedy-1798285435) I found most of the jokes to be pretty surface level and kinda lazy. Ditto Robin Hood Men In Tights.
That’s my go-to example of a movie considered bad that I genuinely enjoy.
It doesn’t directly relate, but as a spoof from this era, I’ve always thought Undercover Brother was really underrated.
Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards (who also had a minor supporting role) met on the set of Loaded Weapon 1.
For sure. Loaded Weapon has some dumb parts, but it definitely feels a lot more on the level of Naked Gun than “remember this...ha! puke is funny” type of spoofs.
I’ve got to stand up for Loaded Weapon 1. It doesn’t deserve it’s reputation as one of the worse copycats.
