I hang out on AITA fairly often, and it’s quite common for the poster to come back and admit they were the bad guy when the overwhelming consensus is that they are TA. It can be pretty heartwarming to see someone admit they were wrong and make amends.

On the other hand, if you were raised by parents who instilled in you a crippling guilt complex and inability to self-affirm, you can sometimes turn to /r/AmItheAsshole to have people with a better compass than you for whether or not you are an irredeemable piece of shit reassure you that every single thing you do…

It’s hardly a “cesspit” compared to your average comments section of a news site. There are some great and useful threads and boards there as Reddit did crack down on the racists, misogynists, and etc and is a lot more nicer now than say, the WSJ’s or the NY Time’s comment board which has become boomer dog whistle…

Reddit is generally a cesspit, but often a valuable source of schadenfreude and morbidly fascinating anecdotes. The number of people who have no idea how to be people is pretty astonishing.

The bar for redemption is VERY low for some people apparently. All I know about this person is from this AITA post, and judging by some of his other responses in that thread, I’m not exactly ready to celebrate this jerk realizing he’s being a jerk.
