Fairly common practice in small towns/rural areas. Like, in a lot of sparsely populated areas of Texas there might be one local guy who drives a cab and he doesn't work late. In these areas, you are routinely taught growing up that if you find yourself without a sober ride you should call the cops to bring you home.

In a lot of small towns this is fairly common practice and something you are told to do. I'm talking little towns where there are plenty of cops, not a lot of crime, and not a lot of taxis. I've been told this by several friends who grew up in rural areas.
