It’s real in that it’s completely normal, even common. Why has it been turned into an identity?

People have become obsessed with microlabelling themselves, I wonder, is this mostly an American thing? Americans can be more uncomfortable with ambiguity than people from other cultures, we seem to like having precise labels. We are pretty obsessed with identity, aren’t we?
