You know what sucks about being parent-ish? Doing what's best for your kid even when it is incredibly inconvenient for you. I'm selling the car that I was planning to give to my former foster son because I told him I would if he got into any trouble. He got into big trouble so I have to follow through so that he

@highjump: I have a set of white cotton undies that I wear during my period and at the end, everything gets bleached.

He's my stepdad! That's why we don't look alike and I call him by his first name, people. It doesn't help when he responds to inquiries with, "oh no, she's not my wife."

@bluebears: Like a procedural reason for denying the application? I can give you examples from other cases since I don't know what happened here.

@bluebears: My point is that the legal reasoning of the other 7 justices behind the denial of an application could be totally unrelated to the facts of the case. So many cases are won and lost on procedural grounds and even though it seems like hair splitting, it's actually what keeps the system functioning.

@bluebears: From ScotusBlog: "Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor would have granted the application to stay the execution." Procedurally, granting the application is not the same as granting the stay of execution or agreeing to hear the appeal. They could have granted the application and, after reviewing it, denied it.

The way I understand it, the vote was only on whether to hear the request for a stay pending appeal and not whether to grant the stay of execution. The effect is the same (obviously) but the legal reasoning is very different. There are many reasons beyond the substantive facts of the case that would cause the other

@Gumbina80: A friend of mine got married in Paris partly because she's got family there but more because it guaranteed a small wedding. I went because it worked for my travel plans that summer but very few others did. She was thrilled.

@ashleenotashley: I'm in my 30s and we're all employed and this is how we do it. It makes sense because it's how we all do it so it works out every year. I am now in a position where I could pay $500 for dinner for everyone or whatever but many of my friends aren't so if I start it, I make it weird for everyone

@MizSpunkSplatter: Yeah, "I don't have the money for that right now" often actually means "I don't choose to spend my money on that right now."

@raquellove: I hope you're still on his ass about it. I'm paying for my brother's defense lawyer and he's going to be in the hole to me for the rest of his life. I better not see that kid with so much as a quarter!

I don't wear makeup when I'm visiting my parents since they live on an island and all anyone does is go to the beach. It's very freeing both to not worry about it myself but also to be in a place where it isn't remarkable to most people I encounter.

@alula: My little brother was murdered two years ago in circumstances that would make the killer eligible for the death penalty in my state. He was 16. I have never been more opposed to capital punishment as I am now. It's devastating for so many people and I would never wish this on another family, not in my name.

@messybessy: And he has to overcome past precedent of not removing other prosecutors who have committed dissimilar but equally disturbing ethical violations like not disclosing exculpatory evidence about defendants.

@jemandtheholograms: I've spent way too much time in criminal hearings lately and you would be shocked, shocked, I tell you with what people think is appropriate.

@teampunkass: Or perhaps your "art" comment was poorly thought out. If you think that you made a mistake then take responsibility for that. Don't push it off on reasonable people who made a reasonable interpretation of your statement.
