The only people I know who have ever intervened are women. Men will pretend that “protecting the women” is part of their masculinity trip but really most of them are cowards.

I had no miscarriages and I would have been terrified to intervene at 7 mos pregnant.  You did what you could safely do in that situation.  If people could not be garbage humans, it would really be great.

I am generally a person who helps.

You tagged this “Los Angeles” rather than merely “Assholery in modern urban life” so I offer an anecdotal counterpoint. Onlookers in Los Angeles can also be very good Samaritans!

But it’s also super easy to look at other humans and think “you’re just like me” rather than “you’re different and therefore NOT human like me”. We can choose how we approach other people and interact with them. Changing institutional racism/sexism/etc is HARD, but it is doable. I do not understand why people don’t

I too! STEP FORTH, SIRRAH!

I’ve been stuck in a couple elevators (never ride with me) and it suuuuucks.

I just assumed everyone was aware of this.

It’s not a small risk. For most people, it’s an infinitesimal risk. There is no nuance to vaccination. If the individual is immunocompetent and not allergic to the components of the vaccine, then the individual should be vaccinated, child or adult.

They are not ignorant of how statistics work, they are cognizant of how statistics work and believe they will beat the odds because they are better people.

Absolutely. They are bad at math. The fact that they haven’t seen how bad the disease is, (many of us have only experienced chicken pox, if that,) and have other non-experts telling them that the diseases really aren’t that bad, they’re betting that even if they’re nailed by the low risk, it’s not going to be bad.

To be fair, due to how a capitalist society functions, and with the privilege of being white. It’s quite easy to have no reason to care for others when you have everything handed to you just for those reasons listed. No challenge = no growth, and eventually, no soul. As a cynicist would say: Life is meant to be a

It’s simpler than that: They just think they won’t get sick. Sickness is for peasants, and they’re better than that, aren’t they?

The lack of empathy is just stunning. This is one of my worst nightmares.

When the Strauss Khan thing happened, the only thing that surprised me was that the Hotel backed the maid.

Dammit, white people with enough money to not worry about money all the damn time.

Corpse? You’re too kind.

Not only did this coddled asshole have this cruel and idiotic take, but he thought nothing about expressing it in public, no less.

I propose we bring back fisticuffs, since we’ve apparently lost touch with our strength. I make ready to pummel this ninny!

I eagerly await the hotel execs responding that “in this age of #metoo we can’t even hire women, because they might get sexually harassed and then we’d be in trouble”.
