I like the Wings comparison; fair point. There’s some sort of Achievement:Talent ratio score that needs to be met for fan satisfaction.

The Carmax ending was a downer. :/
Eh...I mean, no one has interviewed Holtzclaw’s victims, and the story was pulled down quickly, but I’m guessing there was some re-traumatization? And innocent writers of longform for SB Nation will take a hit now, although I know most don’t care about underpaid writers. :/
Agreed, actually. Over-investment in story is a flaw both essay authors seem to share. Good point.
I hadn’t thought of it that way before and agree, thanks for thoughts. Easy for creative non-fiction (and perhaps, “gotcha” journalism) to forget human element. Hopefully some good was done in learning aftermath.
Christina Kahrl did a lovely job of explaining it, on Grantland itself.
I’m assuming Tom is prioritizing the search for bear greatness, it being Friday and all.

Nets fans, is this as simple as “Can I trade Thad Young for a low first-round pick?” or am I missing other possibilities?
I’m verging on tin-foil hat, but I think the Prokhorov gamble was defensible if it didn’t involve losing so many draft picks. Expanding into NY, it was vital that the Nets not look second-rate in their first season.
It was obvious who he was referring to, and he defamed her several times in the book. See R000 sez above for a link to the actual book passage in question. Now tell me he didn’t defame her and didn’t violate the settlement, after reading that passage.
You mean no one remembers that Manning brought it up the second time, and that he’s been sued because he wouldn’t stop talking about it. Take your disinformation campaign elsewhere, heh.
The HBO/premium model may (big “may”) make a difference this time around. I’m not sure I agreed with Simmons’ monetization complaints at ESPN, where at times he made it seem like a few podcast ads would have fixed everything. But I think HBO will give Bill more resources for multimedia (multimedia that can then also…
GM Simmons > Player Simmons, and I’m ok with that.
Good point: I’d add that sometimes athlete friendship seems more for us than for them. Growing up as 80's/90's Cavs fan, I wanted to believe that the smooth play of Price/Daugherty/etc. meant they were all also fantastic off-court friends. As an adult, I don’t want to check if it’s true or not, heh.

Atlanta fits better than I thought; Dwight’s from the area, right? Also some of his greatest success was with great 3-pt shooters in Orlando, Atlanta has Korver and others...yeah, it kind of fits. Ooof.
I was on the losing end of a 2-point game in high school where the other team just held the ball out of bounds and smirked from 3.8 seconds to end of game. Great way to learn the rule, heh.
HA! But here’s the thing. You could tell a borderline D1 recruit to, say, U of R the following: “Sure, we’re not the Big Ten, and we’re not Ivy League. But you know where our road games are? NYC. Chicago. Atlanta. Boston. St. Louis. Cleveland. Pittsburgh.” Couldn’t such a league be a better fit for, say, a city…
