Germany seems like it’s coming along, and they’ve got one of the worst back histories. I think the big difference is that Germany is proactive in remembering the past and learning from it, while America is not active about learning, ever, or being honest with itself in any meaningful way.
America prides itself on not giving handouts to its citizens (regardless if that shit would keep them alive or is beneficial for the economy), so why should any immigrant or child of immigrants want to kiss the hand that doesn’t feed them? America wants a gold star for what... letting someone earn a living?
America is measurably better in some ways than some other countries. Those countries are often conflict-stricken, run by despots, significantly disadvantaged economically, etc.
