@MegaShark: the idea has been mooted more than once. but just imagine, if it takes till now to build a functioning railgun for a small projectile, just imagine how much more power and cooling it'll take to fire something of necessarily higher mass.

@UncleBenny: the flat section you see on the benz is more or less the mandated section and back then was introduced for the most part as ad space. The shark fin as it became known, is as you say for aero. But it's really just an extension of the mandated section that does help airflow to the rear wing. Nevertheless

@UncleBenny: actually the F1 was mandated because the advertisers were running out of space on the rollover structure, anything aerodynamic was a side benefit.

@UncleBenny: in lmp they introduced it as yet another measure to prevent blow overs when the car gets a bit sideways. This is the latest in a long series of regulated changes. Aside from the rounded portions on the side, most of them till now have been to try and force the balance of downforce towards the front. The

@UncleBenny: it's regulated. and yeah i agree that it's ugly. And on top of that there's at least one study that proves my gut instinct; it doesn't even do what it's supposed to, i.e. keep the damn thing from flipping.
