I think Can You Ever Forgive Me wasn’t particularly artful but it felt like almost a throwback - a simple story told simply. I was entertained the whole time I was watching.

The fantasy portion near the end where cops performed a “sting” operation on another racist cop and fired him on the spot ruined the whole movie for me.
