Only if you assume that the non-athlete students are paying 100% of tuition, which 85% of students in this country do not do.
I don’t think that they are motivated entirely by additional revenue, quite the opposite. I think the article would be right to point that out.
Anyone who has worked with admissions would tell you that there is no chance that UAB, or any university, is literally full and therefore turning away students who A) would pay full tuition and B) don’t have low test scores/expected performance levels that would have a negative impact on their numbers.
You’re making the assumption that universities are already hitting their maximum allotment of potential students, which they aren’t. Take UAB for example - they’ve added student every year for 6 consecutive years. Even logical ceilings like available dorm space and class sizes are negotiable.
It, in fact, is usually not the case. UAB itself admitted that it is not hitting its recruitment goals.
Journalism majors don’t make less because of their major, they make less because they decide to try to get a job in journalism.
