In the US funds must, by law, be available in 3 days, but the check doesn’t actually clear for 10 business days. Tell the seller with a cashiers check he’ll get the car in 11 days…

Ah, but the Active duty Military doesn’t have to pay for Medical, Housing, and get a monthly food allowance as well, and 4500/yr for college courses... Take home may not be as much, depending on rank, but a teacher doesn’t get any of those benefits.

Guy could have simply been trying to build a stronger credit history. I know a LOT of people who have done this (they were smart and avoided credit cards as youths, but as a concequence they had not enough credit history when it came time to buy a house or whatever).
