I agree 100%. Skyfall had zero stakes... and went out of its way to tease us with continuity (007 has access to the Aston Martin!) and then just further confuses us. (Wait, why does he have that Aston Martin?) before showing us the tombstones and obliterating the codename theory.

Are the stakes high in Skyfall? Worst case, if the bad guy succeeds, M gets killed - and that actually happens.

The financial drama adds some stakes to the promotion battle - if Rebecca tells C. Oil to take a hike, they may really, really need that 200M pound promotion payment.
