My career was destroyed by a legal event that happened a few years ago (I was accused of something I didn’t do, but Google is forever). I cannot afford to support a child, and am too old to keep up with one if I did.

This is a hard life lesson to you younger folks: if you’re not a success by 50, only 1% of people (or less) will be after 50. Your 20s, 30s, and 40s are really the time where your life happens - marriage, children, prime earning years, building a retirement fund, etc.
