They may not be consistent in the “Pokemon Universe” that came later, but they were generally pretty good within their main limitation - unique designs that show up as distinct characters on a 160 × 144 grayscale display.

Gen IV was actually quite decent. They didn’t grab me at the time, but looking at them now, they were objectively well-designed.

To be honest, I’m not up to speed on Pokemon, so I just googled “ridiculous Pokemon design” and Klefki came up as hit number 1.
