Essentially, all the things I would do to reseason didn't work well (I must have been doing them wrong, or stopped when it started making all the smoke). My mother salvaged it and cooks in it with a metal spatula and it works like a dream now.

I was using peanut oil which should have a higher smoke point.

i had a cast iron and it would fill my house with smoke. I gave up on it, gave it to my mom who loves cast iron, and now it stays with my sister.
