But in Dark Souls you at least keep all your skills and gear. In this, it sounds like if you die once you lose all your skills and get *one* chance to get your gear back.

Right... but once they do develop, they tend to (generally) override self preservation. Most mothers, when faced with a situation of either themselves dying or one of their children dying will instinctively sacrifice themselves(again, like all things human, there are exceptions)
