They're starting a new project now, and in the early stages of a project you simply need fewer people. You can't go into full production until you know exactly what you're making. Right now I presume they're doing concept art, initial character design, level treatments, story pitches, etc.

My iPhone and iPad synced without any effort on my part. I installed it on the iPad after playing a few levels on iPhone, and it just worked the first time.

Skylanders wasn't too bad. The prices were reasonable and the new characters were a lot of fun. The kids really do play with the toys sometimes without turning on the game, and "breaking" one is nearly impossible—sure, you could snap off an arm or a head, but the RFID chip inside is not going to be affected.

Eventually the developer tools will stop supporting these sorts of older devices and then developers will simply move on. The Touch 4th gen is almost there today. It's not worth buying a device right as it sunsets into obsolescence.
