Yeah, I felt the same way regarding the ending. The whole novel felt like oscillated between social commentary and thriller/horror without either element merging into a complete whole. I definitely enjoyed my time with it but it just felt like something was missing.
I can't seem to confirm this anywhere by my understanding was that the Night's Watch exists outside any feudal authority. Their allegiance is to their Oath not to any king. I took Jon's statement literally: the Night's Watch has no king.
