When the cops asked Smollett what happened, he panicked, pretended he didn’t know them and made up this MAGA hate crime story.…

The initial story was a bit suspect. Two white racist MAGA trolls just happened to be cruising a neighborhood with bleach and a noose looking for a black guy to beat up. This itself is not unheard of.
