That is it, exactly. We need to get rid of this tunnel vision in America - race is a part of a person's identity, but it is not their only identity.

This stems from a lot of published authors being white themselves. Most people like to stick to what is comfortable; or they are afraid of writing a character from a different background and then screwing it up (i.e., maintaining traditional stereotypes, even if they don't mean to).
