The reason this is an issue is because ‘g’ can sound like ‘g’ and ‘j’.

What about when the word being mispronounced is your name?  Do you get to correct people then?

Words that come from other languages are problematic. Sometimes times they take on an anglicized pronunciation, and other times they keep their original pronunciation. And a lot of times different people use different standards.

I will continue to pronounce it as “Jif” because frankly I think it sounds better, and I’ll delight in the conniptions it causes in people who think it has any actual consequence.
