The shields seem to only stop fast moving projectiles so that ships can come and go without having to drop shields every time you launch a shuttle or fighter. You can see the shield on the Dreadnaught that Poe flies under before he starts his attack. It’s why big ships have little ships to protect them.

Leah would have been fine in space that long. In real life some subjects survived after more than 3 minutes of total exposure to a vacuum and once returned to normal air was fine after some recovery. A few died after only a minute but being ejected into space doesn’t kill you. It’s staying there that does.
