Final Fantasy’s turn-based roots are in 1987. I don’t think it would have survived as a triple-A IP in this saturated market if it remained true to 1980s game design philosophy.

I think the origin of the stilted dialogue lies in the fact that the script is originally Japanese. Many expressions and sentence patterns do not translate well between Japanese and English, especially when the translators need to fit the dialogue into timed cutscenes.

That sounds terrible. Do you know if Tree of Savior also scales earned EXP and items by level difference between avatar and enemy? I dislike this mechanic for the same reason: It funnels players into specific areas of the world and restricts the sense of freedom and adventure that original Ragnarok Online had.

They had “Smiles are free” on the menu in Canada when I ate there. I used to order five of those at a time. Then they took it off the menu. I must have been breaking the budget.

I notice servers get nervous because they think they’ll need to communicate in English, in which most aren’t fluent. They tend to ease up after hearing you speak Japanese.
