How Chrono Cross treats Chrono Trigger's story is irrelevant. There's nothing sacred about Trigger. But this is beside the point, as the man himself, Kato Masato, said that Cross is not a sequel to Trigger to begin with. Accordingly, Cross should not be judged on how well it follows Trigger's story.
