I disagree that he is awful. He doesn't complain at all that he was "friendzoned." He had no plans to ever tell her, just wanted to move on with his life, but never telling anyone probably prevented that. When he is found out by her completely by accident, he doesn't beg or plead, he just freaks out and leaves her
