I agree! I also like how the wing motif doesn’t appear like an actual wing, but has a visual resemblance to one. I love recognizable-but-not-exact subtlety such as that!

Not just your nose- a long nasal can guard against a lot of attacks to the face. My nasal isn’t all that long and it’s still blocked downward blows that would have hit me in the mouth.

“Why add markings to a common helmet, especially if it’s going to be battered and split in a fight?”

Sweet! That should about cover the rest of the weregild from the last bastard who got in my face. :)

well, even the proto-viking cultures of scandinavia had contact with the romans. perhaps not directly but perhaps through intermediaries. the neil oliver documentary series on vikings talks about an increase in slave taking during that period. it would have sent them eventually to roman controlled lands.

i spazz a bit whenever i meet a history buff that has interest in history beyond world war two, the american civil war, or the american revolution. while i enjoy that history as well, i kind of geek out on more pre-renaissance history... because swords and axes are cool.

She’s written it.

it does make one wonder if norse and germanic pantheons/cultures were identical and only differentiated by the succumbing to christianity in germany. when charlemagne was going after the saxons to conquer and convert them one of the things they did was chop down a tree that the saxons believed was either a

Spangenhelms FTW, sister!

OMFG I thought I would never see that word again! Systembolaget is like state-run IKEA for alcohol, and I never felt so dirty purchasing spirits as I did in snowy Stockholm, behind 200 impatiently toe-tapping drunks.

most history buffs i have met seem more zany. like a hyperactive children when they meet a fellow history buff and can go into conversations and discussions that weave throughout their historical interests.

berzerkers weren’t unique to vikings. some reports said the wore bear skins, others that they were nude. the romans had many encounters with germanic tribes who had warriors of both genders who would fight naked. though the germanic pantheon of gods during the time of rome was similar what the vikings had before the

i often wondered how close the viking shows was going to keep to the sagas. they never mention ragnar’s two oldest sons. nor do they mention the second wife he had, only the first and the third. also it bugs me that they franco’fied rollo’s name to rollo instead of the more viking appropriate & accurate hrolfr. also,

If you’re focused on looking forward, I don’t think it’s that big of an issue. The tradeoff for it is that you’re a lot less likely to get your nose busted up, which in a battle scenario can lead to being instantly staggered and vulnerable, so you won’t be able to block or dodge the next strike coming at you. Not to

Not to mention that the horns/spikes/teats would just guide a sword strike right down onto the top of the head.

You’re taking a sword class? That’s absolutely badass.

I’ve always wondered about those. Yes they provide protection, but it seems like it’s kind of big blind spot right in the middle of your vision. Obviously better than a blind spot on the side but just curious how much it obscures your vision.

You are well prepared for the coming Climate Crisis.

Greetings from Shetland, home of many vikings.
