Moderately surprised he didn’t trot out some holocaust survivors to say they were fine with the slogan.

I, for one, refuse to live in a world involving rules that, if they were in place at the time, would have led the 2008 Wimbledon Men’s Final to be an impressive 6-4/6-4 win by Rafa over Roger rather than the single greatest tennis match of all time.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. It weeds out guys like Zverev who can dominate 3-set tournaments all year long but flame out in 5-setters because they haven’t built up the endurance or learned to pace themselves.
I actually turned off my favorite team for a season one year when I realized I needed to just enjoy the sport and my obsession with them was preventing me from doing that. Not saying you should do that, just throwing it out there. However, if you’re a postal worker then you should absolutely do that.
I tend to think they use “rivalry” just in an effort to sell the match. Sharapova did get one huge win off of Williams, but that is a looooong time ago.
Her only real rival, other than Venus, was Henin. Seems to me. You could argue Hingis I guess, but Serena was still really young when she retired.
Yeah Giri you should write for The Athletic
Quite as many?
You’re right! Until you posted that I would’ve sworn it was at the AO. (Memory is strange.)
From Albert Burneko’s autopsy on Jim Webb’s 2016 campaign, applicable to about 99% of the above names:
Yes, this is the quintessential Andy Murray moment for me, and one of the most memorable sports moments of my lifetime. It was so earnest and human and just punctured through the homogenous “SPORTS PROFESSIONAL” flexing and canned conversations that characterizes all sports at every level now. Shockingly disarming. We…
“Still thinking of Abraham Lincoln as the guy who lost the 1858 Senate contest to Stephen Douglas? Think again.”
[clears throat]
You hate 3 set tennis and hate 5 set tennis and you have enough experience... or a gift, if you will, to just know when to stop watching and pick back up again.
“The solution....is that men should be playing best of three sets at Grand Slams”
That’s some strong english from a Russian.
You gotta out the ball over the white part of the plate
I’ve come to the conclusion that Splinter is going to criticize literally anything that happens or is said by anyone to the right of Karl Marx. If this story wasn’t covered it would be “Why isn’t anyone covering this decorated Admiral calling Trump a twit? COMPLICIT.” Since it was covered the narrative is instead “Why…
Sorry, but McRaven ‘coming out’ is a HUGE deal.
Yes? I’d expect that she was treating the TV as a gift that she wouldn’t want to keep/expected Rose to demand she return if she sued. Regardless, she’s not talking about the filing as making her rich but as creating this immediate liability. I just don’t think it has much probative value one way or the other.
