Angels is altitude, every angels is 1000 feet so angels 5 is 5000 feet.

It’s a plane with wings so it’ll glide like any other plane. Whether it glides better, or worse is beyond me but it’ll glide nonetheless.

Going from a low mount to a high mount wing means moving the MLG mounts well inboard to where they originally were. I wonder if such a drastic narrowing of track would have a detrimental effect on it’s landing characteristics, especially in a pitching/rolling deck situation.

IIRC, nobody knew that there was a credible threat of medium or high altitude SAMs being deployed. Everybody just assumed low level MANPADS were what was being used hence the flight level restriction to flights only above 32,000 feet.

Alot of tactical aircraft have APUs, mostly to allow for ground starts without the need for a start cart and/or ground electrical power.

Wonder what’s the operating expense of a small/med biz jet relative to something like a demilled L-39 or even something with a little more oomph like an F-5?

Kinja eating my images...

Every time I come across that image I remember how awesome the Tomcat was. The F-16 might be a rocket, but the Tomcat was a bruiser.

That may be, but people have, and will continue to do so.

Feel free to express whatever opinion(s) you have.

They’re flaps that open to relieve the low pressure zone that forms over the top of the roof to help prevent the car from flipping.

Huh, I didn’t know that the USAF has it’s own organic tactical Electronic Warfare asset post EF-111 retirement.

Tomcat Sunset patches ruled the roost, a few from my stash:

As vunerable modern US CVBG is to mass swarms of light boats, what’s stopping the carrier from launching a couple of Hornets with AGM-65s Mavericks and going to town on the boats some 50 miles out?

Practically every aircraft being fielded is going to get CFTs, they’re so prevalent it’s coming to a point where I wonder why didn’t they just design the airframe with x amount of gas in the first place. Sure CFTs make sense for an old platform that is being pushed beyond it’s original designs such as the F-16. But

Dust filters? They’re over the intakes not the exhausts so they’re not IR suppressors.

Pretty sure the infamous Dale Snodgrass tried to put together a similar program with retired F-14s just to have the Navy flat out say NO.

It’s too late to challenge China in regards to the islands they’ve been propping up the moment they started building them. You can bitch and whine, but nothing will come of it as they already have a permanent physical presence there, so short term wise China has already won this round. Sending P-8s overhead is great

By the time F-14s were deploying, TOPGUN was already in full swing and kill ratios were commensurately up as well.

I would expect the A-10 and the F-14 to fare rather well, the F-14 especially in the dogfight arena as it’s most prevalent adversary other than SAMs were MiG-21s which is rather lacking in comparison.
