Typically there's a 'weapons check' area for anyone who wants to go inside the actual convention, and they'll have rules on what is and isn't allowed. Typically they'll require things like orange caps on guns, no metal blades of any kind are allowed (even if they aren't sharpened), no real nunchucks, etc.
