Best I could do on the spur of the moment...
Gah. This is EXACTLY the type of event I’d love to see more of – And why I’d rather go camping in the woods with my buddies (several of us have old VW Westfalias) than go to a car show any day. I’ve been jonesing for an old enduro/trail bike for awhile now, and this is only stoking the fire. Sure would like an…
Oklahoma ftw. Looks like Edmond to me, but could just as well be Jenks or BA.
Also, I’ve been a commenter on this site for something like 10 years now. How the hell do I get ungrayed?
The 1960 Bugeye that I (regretfully) let go of a couple years back. Fantastic-driving little ride with a great-sounding 948cc motor. Hope to have another one one of these days.
Came here for this pic. Was not disappointed.
I concur - This has been my daily for going on three years. It’s a glorious every-day car that’s been really rewarding to own/drive/work on.
So am I the only one who sees a lot of the Consulier GTP here?
Hell yes. Hooray for deep gearing and all the motor weight aft of the drive wheels.
In the mid ’90s, my college roommate at Oklahoma State had a cherry-red 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone, with a built 390, 4-speed toploader, and a bitchin’ set of aluminum slotted mags. One memorable weekend, he was kind enough to leave me the keys while he was back home having surgery to repair a broken thumb.
This one's mine...
Having recently researched and purchased a W124 E320 wagon, I can attest to how fantastic these cars are. That said, the common wisdom is that 4Matic versions are to be avoided at all costs – in fact, they're almost worthless thanks to a poorly designed, problematic (and extremely expensive) transfer case. I ended up…
I daily drive a '79 VW Westfalia that I've owned for 10 years now. It's a late Bay with the stock Bosch K-Jetronic FI, 4-speed manual, and front discs. It's been dead-nuts reliable over the length of my custodianship, with regular maintenance. Until I overheated it and dropped a valve seat last year (a midsummer…
I will be in the market for a new full-sized truck this year, am very interested in a half-ton diesel, and have been anticipating the release of this truck. Having seen it, it's off my list. I love the fact that it has Cummins power, but there's no way I could stand to look at (or been seen in) it every day. To my…
You can have the best Range Rover, with the best snow tires money can buy and it doesn't mean shit if you don't think to leave sufficient stopping room ahead of you, watch for black ice, smooth out your controls at the wheel.
Having owned and daily driven a Vanagon of this vintage (and currently owning and driving a Bay version), I'm going with a very reluctant NP on this one. In the Westy world, these early aircooled Vanagons are pretty much the bottom of the heap, but pricing is in line with current levels.
I don't get it either. Woulda been far superior with engine sounds and crash noises.
Great review, Jason. Easily my favorite of any of the classic reviews to date, but then again I might be a little biased.
Sweet! It took about 35 attempts, but I finally got a feature and a H/T from Graverobber. I'm deeply, deeply honored.
