My understanding is that this requires a 2-year commitment, so even if you get the decidely gimped first year for the $40, you're shackled into paying the full $400 the next year. Starts to sound like less of a deal when you factor in that.

It's pretty linear, there are side routes to get from Point A to B occasionally but they're just intended for finding secrets, collectibles, things like that.

Agreed, games like System Shock 2 make the most sense on GoG, they give you a boatload of extras, DRM free, and you get a cool virtual shelf on their site that you can show off all your games (to yourself) on.
Those post-release patches aren't going to make themselves.
