I could see an organization gaining the rights to host some sort of "video game Olympics" tournament in parallel with the actual Olympic Games every 2 or 4 years, but the rapidly shifting nature of the games landscape would make it difficult to present competitive gaming in exactly the same context as Olympic sports.
They're just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. As a consumer you are not obligated to view all (or any) of the promotional materials being put out there; if you want to know more you can look, if you don't then you can not look. You press guys probably have it a bit harder than us on that front.
