There is a spectrum to game designer. At one end is pure mathematician and at the other end is graphic artist.

I have been in the video game and computer entertainment industry for more than 30 years. Please take my advice. If your desire is to be a game designer, then you need to get a computer science and/or math degree. Learning how to script in Unity does NOT count.
